Abstract

The ‘Translations of Chopin’ interweave two artistic attitudes that can be described as revolutionary, namely the ‘revolutionary of words’ and the ‘revolutionary of tones’. The poetic idiom clearly present in the mazurkas, which emerges through a fascination with folk culture, inspired Ujejski, who translated the underlying message of national truth contained in this work into the language of post-Romanticism with which he was familiar. The reception of ‘Chopinesque poetry’ by Ujejski can be situated at two distinct poles. Firstly, there is an appreciation for the value of highlighting the poetics of the contemporary world at the threshold of new challenges. Secondly, however, the work has also been criticised for its tendency towards epigonism, pathos, and Tyrtaean echoes embedded in the aesthetics of national poetry. Numerous speeches by Ujejski have been preserved, serving as an act of faith in the revitalising potency of the word, which – becoming a poetic medium – gains the privilege of shaping the patriotic sensitivity of younger generations: ‘Youth is sincerity!’ This praise of youth, enlightened by the virtue of well-understood straightforwardness, can be directly related to Chopin’s mazurkas, whose poetic adaptations by Ujejski constitute a unique and singular creation. The analysis of these poems, particularly from the perspective of a performer–interpreter, significantly brings the image of the era closer – a common ground for shaping sensitivity and worldview, opening a new perspective that is invaluable both in the process of interpretation and in the reception of the work.
